Illustrator Properties Panel Dock "stuck" to the top of Mac– canvas isn't able to dock panels?

Hello! I'm an incredibly experienced Adobe user and this is driving me mad. For some reason, the properties panel, tools panel, etc. are disconnected from the Canvas itself. I want to dock my panels into the canvas, rather than having the canvas floating around, but I can only dock these panels to the Mac screen. Any help?
