Illustrator render time is soooooooooo slow....nothing works in real time....

Hi all! I am making 3D text in Illustrator and every little change takes nearly a minute or more to render and reveal the results. I can't use the sliders at all to see where things are going. I have a feeling this has something to do with my MAC, but if anyone could tell me what I need to have in order to get things to work at a non-glacial pace, that would be wonderful. THANK YOU!
