When I try to copy a text from a pdf created by Illustrator, I get squares . Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a fresh and new doc in Illustrator.

2. Type a sentence.

3. Change font to Myriad Variable Concept Light.

4. Save as... pdf using default configuration.

5. Enjoy the error.

Most probably they just don't support variable concept fonts.

Use a different font, use Myriad Pro.

    1. open file in adobe acrobat pdf reader

    2. go to MENU>Doucment Properties>Fonts

you will see what are the fonts used in it, and install all those fonts

and then open the pdf in Illustrator

When opening a file and the fonts are not installed, Illutrator will tell you their names. Also: in this 4 year old case Acrobat and other PDF viewers *were* the issue.

You open the PDF in which app? And then copy to which app?

Variable concept fonts are not supported by a lot of applications. They are still experimental in Illustrator as well.

I open the PDF with any app like Adobe Acrobat DC, Chrome or Adobe Reader. I copy the text to any app like Word, Notepad or Chrome.
