Illustrator shows wrong accent letter when editing a Turkish text

Hi all,

 

I'm editing a Turkish text and need to add an ş [s cedilla - Unicode 015f] to the text. Text is set in Helvetica Neue LT Pro 75 Bold.

When I click the Glyphs panel to add the character ş, instead of adding the correct character Illustrator adds an ș [s comma - Unicode 219]. I tried in a different font (Myriad Pro) and that seems to work as expected, but since there is no [s comma] available in that font I'm not sure if it could go wrong the way it does with Helvetica.

 

Anyone else has seen this kind of behaviour? Do you think this is font related or caused by Illustrator.
Any solutions or workarounds would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Thanks for confirming the details. I tried replicating this behavior using the Arial and Bahnschrift fonts, and it worked fine. Would you mind trying to use a different font and sharing your observations?

I tried again with different fonts in different apps, and the behaviour for Helvetica Neue LT Pro is the same in MS Word as well : I am not able to type the [s cedilla] in either app - both [s cedilla] and [s comma] are replaced with [s comma].

Works perfectly with Myriad Pro and Proxima Nova.

 

So yeah, probably a font issue, and not solely Illustrator related. I'll see if I can fix it by deactivating some fonts.

It sounds frustrating to deal with incorrect glyphs, especially when working with specific characters like “ş” in Turkish text. The issue you’re describing could indeed be related to the font you’re using (Helvetica Neue LT Pro 75 Bold), as some fonts may map certain Unicode characters differently or might not fully support them.

 

Since it seems to work correctly in Myriad Pro, it’s likely the problem lies with how Helvetica Neue LT Pro handles certain characters.

Try copying the “ş” character from another program (such as Word or a Unicode character map) and pasting it directly into Illustrator. This might bypass the issue.

Hello Anshul,

 

thanks for the feedback. I've tried copying from Word but the character is changed to the wrong accent letter as soon as I paste the text into Illustrator.

On top of that: when I look in the Glyphs panel, the character is present in the glyphs overview. But for some reason Illustrator picks another accent letter instead of the one I double click. Screenshot in attachment 🙂
