Illustrator slow / not responding / not enough RAM

Hello,

I'm having a problem with Illustrator running painfully slowly for one of my files. This is for an assignment that is requiring me to use 3D Classic effects.  It seems OK with other files.

It keeps giving me "not responding" messages and taking forever to do even the smallest of tasks.

I will also get messages that there isn't enough memory and it then crashes.

I'm also getting alerts that say that there isn't enough RAM to display artwork or preview things. Sometimes it will crash, sometimes it just takes a giant pause of several minutes.

I am using a Surface Book 2 which has 16GB of memory. There's also 725GB free on my hard drive. I have reset my preferences and everything is up to date, including my Graphics card, so I can't figure that it's run out of RAM or memory.

I'm not running anything else when I'm using Illustrator - although I am using a second monitor.

If anyone has suggestions for how to improve the performance and stop this crashing it would be greatly appreciated - my assignment is due next week and I'm starting to panic that I won't be able to finish in time, or at all! Thanks!

Correct answer Monika Gause

Thanks, Monika

I checked the artwork again and did a clean-up - but it said that there was no clean-up necessary (I've tried that several times) - there aren't any stray points left.

I'm also not allowed to rasterize anything for this assignment, so that's not an option for me.

At the moment I'm just limping along and I guess that I'll have to budget a lot of time to complete it.

Can you please just try if rasterizing would help?

I wasn't referring to automatically cleaning it. While it's good that there are no stry points (they cause their own issues with 3D effects), you should just look at the artwork if there are other possible causes of issues.

16 GB is just the recommended minimum.

Can you show a screenshot of the 3D objects you are dealing with?

Is it possible that they are slightly complex?

Hi Monika,

I don't know if it's overly complicated.  I didn't think it was.  I managed to do the left jar a while ago and it wasn't a problem.  Now I'm trying to use the mapping to apply the label to the right jar and it's a nightmare.  Everything that was done in the 3D effect for the left has been expanded.

Here are some screenshots of what I'm working with:

Are you using the new 3D & Materials effect? Have you tried the 3D (Classic) effect?

Sorry - I forgot to mention that I'm running it on Windows 11.

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions Anubhav.  I gave them all a try, but unfortunately, they didn't make any difference.
