Question

Illustrator slow to open and save documents

The Issue:

After about two months after installation with no issues, Illustrator has started slowing down when opening files and saving files. (This has happened on multiple computers in our office, all with the same config as listed below.) When opening a blank file, there is a short pause (15 seconds) where the document window is black and then the document appears. On files that are more complex, the time extends proportionately to the size of the file. Saving files takes an unusually long amount to time as well just the same.

Why do I call it an unusually long amount to time? I can take the same documents and open them on another computer and they open and save instantly.

Software:

MacOS 10.10.5

Illustrator 20.1.0   (CC 2015.3 Photoshop, InDesign also installed)

All 3rd party plug-ins removed and OS X base fonts only present

Hardware:

  Model Name:Mac Pro
  Model Identifier:MacPro6,1
  Processor Name:6-Core Intel Xeon E5
  Processor Speed:3.5 GHz
  Number of Processors:1
  Total Number of Cores:6
  Memory:16 GB

Troubleshooting:

I ran through all of the normal suggested things to try:

-Reset preferences

-Trash the entire Adobe folder in the Application Support folder

-Delete the Cloud Cache files

-Delete the OOBE file and re-login to CC

-Remove all 3rd party plug-ins

-Close any unnecessary fonts (make sure Tahoma and Verdana are correct versions)

-Uninstall Illustrator and reinstall

-Shut off network connection

-Unplug any external HDs

-GPU Performance off

-Auto save off

-Show start workplace off

-Repair permissions/repair boot drive

-Clear font caches

Troubleshooting method that fixed the problem:

The only way I could get the delay to go away was to create a new OS X user on the computer and log in as that user. Illustrator then runs as you would expect it to with no delays.

The problem I have then is that I have to rebuild the users computer to fix the issue. In our environment, I don't have time to completely re-setup everyone every couple of months. It takes time to re-setup mail accounts and all of the internal systems we use.

My plea for help!

I would like to know what can be done to correct the issue without having to create a new user or start from scratch in a fresh OS X build. There has to be something going on in a setting or cache file or process gone bad somewhere that can be reset.

Thank you in advance if you can respond...

P.S. (Hello Adobe support)

I tried calling the Adobe support number for Teams (we pay $2000 a month to use the software). I was transferred to 7 different people and eventually gave up on trying to get someone to tell me that they were to correct person to speak to. It took an hour and a half out of my day. It's crazy to think that Adobe is getting so much $ from us and they can't even provide phone support. The call center I went through at 800-443-8158 was full of people barely equipped to competently provide assistance. When they realized that they couldn't answer my questions, they just passed me on to someone else... over and over. I remembered I had received an automated email from someone at Adobe a while ago and called him (Ashish Paul @ 866-646-1776 x 33174 Territory Account Manager) He took my name and number and said someone would be calling me... hasn't happened yet.

I had this exact problem and realized that I had copied in full-images multiple times rather than the vector forms.

Silly mistake on my part, but sluggishness on open and save were immediately fixed once I replace the images with the vector versions.

    Hope this might help someone.

Is a printer connected and turned on?

Illustrator does not prticularly like network printer queues. So do you have a default printer on those machines?

Yes we have several networked printers with Postscript RIPs. If the printer connection was the issue it would also be affecting the 20 other macs on the network. I also shut off the ethernet interface as part of the testing process and there was no difference. As a double-check I will try deleting all of the printers on the mac and see if it makes a difference.

    Thanks for your suggestion.

Illustrator tries to access a printer every time it opens or closes or saves a file.

It needs to find one, so uninstalling completely probably would lead to the same error. Can you install a PDF printer?
