Question

Illustrator slow with large files

Working sometimes with files around 100mb, illustrator performs very slow, above 200mb it's nearly not possible to work anymore.

I work on an imac Retina 27inch, late 2015, 3,2 Ghz intel Core i5, RAM 8 GB  1867 Mhz, so not an old computer

Would it help to install more RAM (up to 16 GB is possible)?

Or does illustrator always work slow on files exceeding 100 - 200 MB?

Thanks

Illustrator doesn't necessarily get slower as the file size increases, but it may slow down if the artwork is complex, has a lot of anchors, or uses a lot of effects. Are you doing anything with the art that would be considered complex?

Thanks!

Well it's hard to answer this in detail. As said my files are maps. There are no effects. There are very many vecors, some have very many anchor ponts.

There are about 60 layers.

Also remarkable: I just edited some locations of text boxes and a few other things. The file was 128mb before this, saving it as a new file, it turned 163mb... So file size seems to be a bit random

Thanks!

Which system, which version?

What's in the files?

Where are the files located?

In case there are images linked in the files: where are those located?

Thank you Monika,

Here we go:

macOs High sierra version 10.13.1

Files are located on an external hard drive, via thunderbolt 3.0

No linked images

The files are maps. Many layers, much text

Thanks

Can you try if copying the files to your hard drive and then opening them works better?

Of course close down all the other applications, because 8 GB RAM actually is not that much.
