Question

Illustrator takes forever to open after a crash (if it opens at all).

Please can someone help as my productivity is going through the floor.

I am running a 2019 27" iMac 3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 - 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 - Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB. OS Sequoia 15.3.2.

For a few months now I have been having problems with my Adobe CC apps, particularly Illustrator, although it also happens with PS and ID from time to time.

When zoomed in doing intricate work (illustrating in Illustrator or retouching/clipping paths in PS) one of these two will hang the system in such a way that I cannot access the dock, but the cursor is still moving about the screen when i try to click on various things. So my Mac is not hanging per se, but everything else becomes unavailable to me. I cannot force quit anything to get back to the finder or any other app and the only way out is to restart.

So, I get the option to reopen previous apps when i restart, and it makes no difference whether I do this option or choose any other, but exactly the same thing happens every time.

Illustrator goes through the opening splash screen until it gets to the plug ins part and then it just sits there for ages… sometimes, maybe after 20 minutes, it ploughs through and manages to work but most of the time that is as far as it gets and I have no option to force quit, as the Activity Monitor indicates the app is not responding.

Every third or fourth time it will go through to opening but then i get the beachball of death for ages.

The only solution I have found is to uninstall through CC and then reinstall again… and then it will start up ok and recover the docs I had open previously.

I used to run Extensis Connect for activating and managing my extensive font collection (all upgraded to work with 2024 Adobe thing, as in no ps fonts) but it has become almost unusable, so I now use RightFont. I'm a print based graphic desinger so I do use a lot of fonts and have quite a few activated at times, but nothing excessive.

I also have Esko Studio running as an Illustrator plug in. I am definitely up to date with that.

Anybody have any idea what might be causing this or what a possible solution could be? Is this pointing towards an app problem or a hardware problem?

TIA. And excuse the amount of info… I didn't know how much was helpful for analysis.

Hello @Andylarkin,

Would you mind checking if you have any other apps/plugins/window managers running when using both Illustrator and Photoshop, and temporarily disabling them to see if it helps? Also, try validating your fonts (https://adobe.ly/3YWObyZ) and running Illustrator under a different administrator account (macOS), and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello Anubhav,

It happens so frequently that I often have other apps open.

Usually I will have InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat and PS open at the same time as I flick between them regularly with the nature of the work that i do.

Then Mac Mail, Safari and Spotify. And also the Esko Studio Suite. Studio as a plug in with Illustrator plus the two standalone parts, Esko Studio Toolkit and Esko Studio Viewer.

Sometimes I have Firefox open and occasionally Powerpoint and Word or Excel. Its really difficult to tell at the time so this is from memory. As for the plug ins, Esko is a plug in that is always on, as is the Astute Graphics Suite.

I just cleared out some fonts from fontbook and that has definitely helped to improve the start up time for both Illustrator and InDesign. Thank you for that.
I'll see if I can get the zoomed in thing to make any of the CC site crash again and try and save the log. Would that help?
