illustrator text

hi guys, i have opened a pdf document in illustrator that was original created with AI, it from xmas time.

 

basically i have wanted to edit the text on it ( its a restaurant menu) but when i click on a word i want to change it looks like all the 'words' are now individual letters not words. can someone tell me why and how i can get it back to being a whole words instead of individual please?

You will probably lose a lot of formatting and glue some words together, but you can try this:

Select all text with the normal selection tool (V).

Cut or copy.

Drag with the Text tool a text area.

Paste.

If your text is still live, there's a script by Robin Frederic called Merge Text Block (or something esimilar) that can reassemble it - look here http://robinfredericf.free.fr

    If you have Acrobat, you can try using the OCR capabilities of that app to change the text back into type.

    When you save as a pdf out of AI, you need to make sure that you retain editable properties. Looks like you didn't do that when you originally saved it and so those properties are lost. I am afraid you can't get them back. You will either need to reconstruct the document again in AI or try to manipulate the individual letters.

    Hi yes, this is due to its editable properties not been saved when saving pdf...regards

    Do you have the original AI file?  You will need that to edit it as it was created originally.  Once it was converted to a PDF it loses all the functionality of all the editing of layers that was available in the original file.
