Illustrator Text Import Options - Can't view file

I have a student that saved an Illustrator CC 2018 file of a character using Windows 10. When she went to re-open it, the "text import options" dialog box opened. When she clicks ok, there is a blank frame, and her design in gone. There was no text in this file, originally so, I don't understand why the text import option is popping up. There are numerous people with this same problem on this forum, but no solution that I've seen. I've tried changing the file extension to uppercase, and also tried to reset preferences using CTRL+ALT+SHIFT....nothing happens. The student worked 6 hours on this design, and we really need it back.

Do you have file recovery software on your Windows machine? What is the file name? Are there too many characters on the file name? Sometimes renaming a file to a really short name with .ai at the end can help it open. I have had files from customers come in with too long of a name and it won't open unless I rename it. If that doesn't work, could you possible share the file to see if one of us can open it?

The file has gone corrupt.

What you can try now:

if the file is on a server, first download it to local disk then open

try and create a new file and place this file in it. Several things won't be fully editable anymore.

There are recovery services online. They might or might not be able to recover the file, but they are not for free.

You should be more cautious when saving files. Save them locally first. Always make backup copies, save different versions. Don't save directly to thumb drives and the like. Always keep multiple copies of files. Use backup software. Be careful with synchronized folders.
