Illustrator won't allow drag and drop to copy a layer

I use this feature a lot in PS and Ai still works in PS

 

I just want to duplicate a layer in the exact position it is already in 

 

usually I select and drag the layer that I want to copy to the + sign at the bottom of the layers panel and boom new layer exactly on top of the old one

 

Now nothing

- did cut and paste to make sure that was working - it is

- tried it on an old file - does not work on files I have done this with before

- closed and reopened Ai

- all is updated

- tried cutting and pasting to a new file, still won't work

 

Did the latest update take this function away?

Sorry about the trouble you are facing. I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrtaor
  • Is the issue related to a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Does resetting Illustrator Preferences ( https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help to resolve the issue?
    Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

 

Also, you may try running the app in Safe Mode (Windows / Mac) and see if it is working there.

    Hi 

    I  now realize that the issue is really that I can not drag a layer to rearrange order of stack in the pallette at all

     

    I do this function daily - and this just started yesterday

     

    I am on the latestest update 25.4.1

    I am running Windows 10

     

    I tried all of the things that you mentioned

     

    It is a global problem not limited to 1 file 

     

    I am a daily user and this just started yesterday

     

    No new updates on anything outside of adobe

    I also just realized that I can not move an object on the artboard by dragging with the mouse

     

    Every time I try, I get a "ding" and can not move

     

    If I use my keyboard arrows, it will still move though
