Illustrator won't let me select or edit layers

Hi, this is my first time here and I couldn't seem to find this particular problem discussed anywhere. I'm working on Windows 10 and have had Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign on my computer for quite a while. All programs have been working fine until just yesterday I suddenly can not select or edit any layers on Illustrator. The courser hovers over the layers and disappears when I click to select, lock, hide etc. and nothing happens. One of the layers in particular has some artwork that I can't seem to bring back after "hiding" it. I hope it's not completely lost. Thank you in advance.

*My apologies, I forgot to mention on working with Illustrator CC.

Have you saved the file?

If not, save as it with a different name.

Then restart the computer.

Does it work then?

Can you show a screenshot?

When you open the layers by clicking on the triangle - is there anything inside?
