Ilustrator opening all docs as a 12x12 no matter the original size

This just started today. I was using Illustrator yesterday and it wasn't doing this. But today I opened a jpg in illustrator that is 8.5x11 and illustrator opens it as a 12x12. I then have to change the artboard size to fix the problem. I assume there was an automatic update either on my computer or adobe to cause this but does anyone know how I can turn that off?
