Ilustrator will not open .cgm files even though it's supposed to.

I have the latest and greatest update of Illustrator on my computer. It's supposed to open .cgm files, but it doesn't. Instead I receive an error that the file is an unknown format and cannot be opened. Grrrrrrrrrr!!! I have searched this forum and it doesn't seem anyone is receiving much assistance about this.
