Question

Image disappearing in dowloaded files

I'm having issues with a design after I save a copy of it or export it.

When I download it in a pdf it appears to be fine, but if I zoom in or out the photo in it flickers, when I try to upload the pdf to other platforms (in this case, Vellum, as it is a book cover) the photo completely disappears. If I try to export a jpg, png, or tiff, it makes a huge white border that makes the photo unusable. I've tried everything I can think of, and I've never had this problem in the past. Everything I've done on this cover I've done for my previous covers, and none of them have issues with images disappearing. (Though they have had the jpg, png, and tiff issues, so I've always just used the pdf to put in vellum and have vellum generate a jpg.) I've tried linking, embedding, and changing the image's file type. I've made a completely new file and restarted the design from scratch, which seemed to work at first then it had the issue again. I don't know what's wrong or how to fix it and can't find anything on youtube based on my description. Has anyone had the problem? How do I fix it?

Thanks!

I'm also at a loss about why the photo is causing you issues (without seeing files), but as for the extra white area on your exporting of a jpg, png, or tiff, it might be because you didn't select "Use artboard": When you don't, the exported image will included everything including anything lying outside the edge of the artboard, which in your case might be the uncropped dimensions of your "missing' photo.

So the photo is there when you open the PDF in Acrobat directly after exporting it from Illustrator?

If that is the case, and the issues only appear after uploading the file to some webservice, then you have to check with them about their file specifications and make sure you meet them. If it still does not work, then you have to work it out with them.

When I open the pdf on illustrator or photoshop it's there. It made photoshop act strangely. I was able to use photoshop to get me a working image for now, but I'd like to figure out why the pdf wouldn't work this time when everything that I can see was the same as any other file I'd previously used and made, and they were all still working. When the pdf opens automatically from creating the copy, the photo is initially there, but if I move it or zoom in or out at all, it flickers and sometimes completely disappears. So it's not just disappearing when uploaded to the other service.

WIthout seeing the actual files, it will be impossible to help you.
