import Photoshop document into Illustrator

Help... I wanted to open / place / import  a doucment I created in  Photoshop and work on it with it's various layers in Illustrator. However, when I try to do this I get the message " This document has greater then 8-bit depth. It will be imported as an 8-bit flat composite."  So the document shows up in Illustrator as just one layer and cannot be edited.
