I want to import a scanned sketch to trace in Illustrator

    Create a new document, and add the scanned sketch with File > Place. Once the image is on the artboard, you can begin tracing manually, or using the automatic Image Trace button on the Control panel.

    If you use the Image Trace feature as Barb suggested remember to click on the Expand button on the Control Panel next to the Image Trace after running the trace. This will make the tracing into editable Illustrator art.
