InDesign and Illustrator Gurus Question

Let me preface by saying I am old,  I use Adobe products like they were intended years ago. I know the lines between them are bluring more, but I still (mostly) use each as intended.

I have been getting a lot more requests to do InDesign things in Illustrator. And I'm talking big clients, that even after the discussion, they still want it that way. All I can think of that might be driving the uptick is that as I mentioned the lines are bluring, sign shops ask for Illustrator, ease of importing it into Canva, PDFs open in Illustrator, I'm Old, all the above and more.... idk So let me not bore you and get to the point...

Things I can immediately think of that I will miss on a current project...Text Variables (not data merge), Nested Styles, Custom Bullet Lists and Tables with more control of the borders. Any ideas of how to do them, scripts, software that could help the pain? Go....

What is your deliverable--a PDF or native files?

You could:

Create the job in InDesign,

Export PDFs,

Place PDFs in Illustrator,

Save as PDFs from AI.

Could you please describe more detailed what exactly you need to do? Maybe show sketches and examples?

Simple stuff. I know I could rock it out in ID ...

Example: A threaded text frame with a bulleted list.

A. lskjflajfljkfdsjf

B. jlkfjlkdfjldfjlsa

C. sjkfsjflkafjljfd

D. lskjflajfljkfdsjf

E. jlkfjlkdfjldfjlsa

F. sjkfsjflkafjljfd

Nested Paragraph Styles

BOLD = Lorum Ipsum yada yada

Bold:

Lorum Ipsum yada yada

Hello world

Hello world

Title
Heading 1

Body yada yada lorum ipsum

A table with no outer lines and different inner lines.

Example: Photos that pull in captions.

My AI experience is more on the illustration side of things. If I need to rock a multi-page document brochure with parent page,  Multiple Headers, Tables, BL photos with captions etc I personally wouldnt choose AI. Not that you cant just not where I would go so wondering if you all have any insite or tips on that side of things I may want to delve into to make me not go crazy.

Lists are possible, but not with the kind of formatting you have in mind. Forget about nested styles. There is a plugin for tables, but I doubt that it can do the kind of formatting you want to apply to the borders of the table.

You might want to partner with a scripter for the variable and search and replace stuff in text.

Or talk to your clients about what makes sense and what doesn't. It's sometimes necessary to create packaging in Illustrator because of ESKO. But using Illustrator because it's the only thing the client has, might not be a good reason.
