Insert Select Path grayed out in action menu

Insert Select Path grayed out in action menu no matter what I seem to do. I can't figure out if I'm using the wrong tool to select or what? The tutorials are woefully lacking on this feature, can anyone tell me what I"m doing wrong. I've read other posts about HOW to use it, just can't get it to be an option.

Hi. I figured out my problem in the interim. The files I was working on were exported from PPT and there were just a TON of unnecessary compound paths in them, so even with a direct selection, Illustrator wouldn't recognize the paths. Anyway, I appreciate your response. Thanks! Å

seems to work fine if i select a path with either selection tool. list the steps you're trying in detail?
