Is there a method to perfectly position and scale a new element with one already existing in a file?

I am working on a product label. In this product label I have a raster graphic element of a cartoon character.

I am generating 2 files for the printer - 1) the color artwork, and 2) a white layer, where a spot color signifies where a special second pass is going to be done.

Now, I have my color raster element, and then I have a copy of it where that element is the spot color. Using linked files from Photoshop.

My question is, if I scale and position the color element, and then want to bring in the spot color one, how can I perfectly match it to the color one? I can bring in both elements at once, and scale/position them simultaneously, and delete one or the other depending on which file I'm exporting, but it seems like there must be a better way to do this.

I think I may have just figured this out...

1. Click element

2. File > Place
3. Choose the matching element

4. Tick the "Replace" box
5. Hit Place
