Is there a possibility to edit an original .ait file?

I have several templates created, if I want to update one of these templates, I need to create a new one from it or I can edit it without recreating a new one? I wonder. Why is it faster to edit the original file than to recreate a new one, because in addition to being faster, you save more bytes in your computer's memory.

You can't just edit it.

Create a new file from it and then overwrite the older version.
