Is there some way to determine whether shapes and artwork drawn with the Pen tool were done so with the fewest anchor points necessary? How do you ensure that you have the smoothest curves, etc. Is this something you just learn from experience or is there some tool is AI for this?

Thanks.

You can try and Object > Path > Simplify.

But this might also distort your paths.

    Or try Illustrator's Smooth tool.

The plugin VectorScribe has an even better Smooth tool.

But even then: you will still need experience.

It is difficult to determine how something is drawn whether it be auto-trace or with the pen tool.  Often when something is draw with the pen tool the result is fewest anchor points.  The aretist can, along the way, add or delete anchor points as he/she deems necessary.  When something is traced, then the result is way too many anchor points and a line that is fragmented and un-even.
