Is there a way to link text to AI file for future updating (Library or Variable)?

Hello, 

I'm trying to figure out if there's a workflow similar to InDesign's linked text or InCopy files where I can place some kind of text, then be able to update that source later and have it update in other files/copies that make use of this linked file. Any thoughts?
