Question

Is there a way to reduce display resolution for images?

I tend to work on projects with a lot of large, high-quality images, which usually slows down Illustrator quite a bit, especially when saving the doc. I've tried lowering the raster resolution under "Document Raster Effect Settings" but that doesn't usually do much. Is there a setting similar to "View Quality" in Indesign I can use to make working with images a bit faster?

Is it necessary that you see them all at the same time? If not, put some of them on a layer that you then make invisible.

If you work with linked files, you can speed up saving by turning off Create PDF Compatible File.

When you want to use the .ai file in other applications you need to turn it back on.

I doubt you will find a satisfying workflow for this. AI doesn't really have a proper proxy workflow and since it has a tendency to embed data when it realyl shouldn't because the linking system is kinda shot, substituting external images is not much of an option, either. AI really is a big old clunker in that regard and its poor memory handling doesn't help...
