Is there a way when searching for similar fonts in the character menu they show as Regular weight?

Is there a way when searching for similar fonts in the character menu to get them to show as Regular weight instead of showing them in the thinest weight  possible?

@rcweburg short answer is 'no.' Although, you could try the 'Retype (Beta), under Type' of the main menu.
