Issue opening files in Illustrator

I’m having an issue opening files only in Illustrator. I have to double click every file I want to open twice to get it to open. After double clicking it once some files appear to be opening but don’t. After I double click it again it opens. I have had this issue for a few weeks now. I’ve searched online & do not see any similar issues. I am using an iMac & was using Monterey OS & Illustrator 2022 then started using Illustrator 2023 but still had the same issue. Upgraded my OS to Ventura & still have the same issue. No other Adobe program does this. It happened all of a sudden & as far as I know I did not change any preferences or settings. Also when opening a file some file names appear greyed out until I click on the name bar & they turn black. Any suggestions? This is killing my productivity.

I tested one more thing - using Command Open, I selected the file but hit the open button instead of double clicking the file & the same thing happened, so may not have anything to do with double clicking the mouse.

Thanks for confirming that. Would you mind trying the following steps and checking if it helps:

 

• Close all Adobe applications.
• Go to the following locations
• ~/Library/Caches
• ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe
• ~/Library/Preferences
• Rename Adobe Illustrator, com.adobe.illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings folders to Adobe Illustrator.old, com.adobe.illustrator.old and Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings.old
• Launch Illustrator from the Creative Cloud.

Note: Location starting with this "~" sign indicates the User Library, which is hidden. So, you need to copy & paste the exact path in spotlight search or from Finder Menu > Go > Go to Folder > Paste the location in the dialog box like this:

Hello @MacType,

 

Sorry to hear about this experience. Would you mind resetting the Double Click settings under Mouse Preferences to default and checking if it helps?

 

Also, try logging into a different user account and sharing your observations.

I wan't sure how to reset the double clicking settings so I googled it. The window that is suppose to pop up according to what I read did not pop up. I am using Ventura OS now. Not sure if that's why. I don't see a setting for double clicking except for under Accessibility - Pointer Control, but I don't see how to reset that to the default setting.

I logged into the only other user on my computer & I did not have the same issue. The file opened after the first double click. Not sure what could be different.

I just tried something... I double clicked a file to open, but it did not actually open, but when I look at Open Recent Files under File the file name is listed & when I click on that it opens the file. Not sure if that might shed some light on the issue?

Do you have Illy 27 set to your default app for opening those file types?

Are you also running 26 on the same computer?

I'm not on a Mac but I can't set 27 to the default if 26 is also on the computer, hence I only have 27 installed and double clicking now works fine...

Yes, it is set as the default app. Illustrator 27 is usually already open for the files I'm trying to open. I was having the same issue with version 26 also, but not until 2 weeks ago. It was fine before that. I'm not aware of any preferences or settings that I might have changed. If I did, it was completely accidental. I have not uninstalled version 26 yet though, but I do not have both running at the same time.
