Issue with Exporting JPG Files for Mobile Viewing on WhatsApp

I am experiencing an issue when exporting JPG files using Illustrator, I am able to successfully export the JPG files to my computer folder. However, when I share the exported JPG as a document via WhatsApp, the recipient is unable to view it on their mobile device, although they can view it without any problems on a PC.

Could you kindly assist in resolving this issue, or provide guidance on how to ensure the file is viewable on mobile devices when shared through WhatsApp?

Thank you for your assistance.

If the file is viewable on a PC, then probably this needs to be solved by WhatsApp. Have you asked them?

Hi @wendy_ong_5185,

Could you please try re-exporting the JPG file from Illustrator using the 'Save for Web (Legacy)' option instead of the standard export? Once you’ve re-exported, send the image again through WhatsApp and see if the issue persists. If it still doesn't open, please let me know the version of Illustrator and the operating system you’re using, and if possible, share a small sample file, so I can try to reproduce the issue.

Looking forward to your update!

I’ve already tried exporting the JPG using the 'Save for Web (Legacy)' option as suggested. While it did resolve the compatibility issue, I noticed that the image quality is significantly lower compared to the standard JPG export as document. Let me know if there’s a way to retain the higher quality while still ensuring it opens correctly on WhatsApp. Otherwise, I can share a sample file along with my Illustrator version and OS details to help troubleshoot further.

Hi @wendy_ong_5185,

Thanks so much for the update.

I agree with Monika's suggestion as well. Since the image opens fine on a PC, the issue could be related to how WhatsApp handles JPG metadata or encoding on mobile devices. It may be worth reaching out to WhatsApp support to check if they have specific file requirements for viewing documents on mobile.

In the meantime, as a workaround, please try exporting the JPG via File > Export As, choose JPG, and in the export settings, set the color model to RGB, the resolution to High (300 ppi) or around 150–200 ppi, and the quality to Maximum. Also, try to avoid using any special characters in the file name, as that can sometimes affect compatibility.

Let me know how that goes, and feel free to share the sample file if you'd like me to help test it further.

Looking forward to your update!
Abhishek
