Issue with Illustrator auto deselecting objects

I select an object.

Move the mouse to the color palette (or anywhere really).

The object loses focus.

This will also happen if I select an object and just wait 5-8 seconds. The object loses focus to where nothing is selected. I need to reselect the object and frantically change its properties (color, line width, etc.) before losing focus.

 

This happens constantly. Doesn't matter the file size.

 

Thoughts? Suggestions?

 

MacOS Mojave 10.14.4

Illustrator 24.1

Sorry. Just saw this. I didn't receive an email that you responded.

 

Long story short, I think there was a problem with the file. Something screwy. I restarted but no change. No other files are affected.
