Joining Paths Together - Should work, right?

It's been a little while since I've worked in Illustrator. I use a lot of other CAD programs and perhaps I'm used to the simplicity and sophistication of drafting in them, so I can't figure why this basic thing eludes me in illustrator: This should just work right: Select coincident anchor points of adjacent paths > join?

Hard to tell without the artwork, but there could be 3 points on top of each other. Try moving them with the direct selection tool.

It's only two lines (paths). It couldn't be more simple, that's why I'm confused: It should be possible to join two paths together at their end points I would think, right?

Please share the Illustrator file for inspection.
