JPEG with weird look when I save it in CMYK

Hey!

When I save a JPEG file in CMYK in Illustrator it ends up looking very strange. It seems to change and darken the colors. I'm attaching an example here. When I change the colors to RGB, that doesn't happen, but I need the colors to be in CMYK, for print. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can solve it?

Thank you!

defaultw,

"When I change the colors to RGB, that doesn't happen, but I need the colors to be in CMYK, for print."

Unless you specifically need a CMYK JPEG for print, I would suggest the following:

1) Create the AI (vector) artwork in CMYK Color Mode:

2) Create a PDF for print based directly on 1);

3) Create a separate RGB version of 1) for web/screen use, and then Save As SVG if applicable, or Save for Web/Export as PNG, or JPEG for artwork containing photo(like) colour transitions.

Ton has already mentioned PDF for print as in 2).

Hi @defaultwo0pjd4fvyt4,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing. I agree with @Ton Frederiks. Many users have reported this issue in the past. Are you using the Photos app to view the CMYK jpegs? For some time, there has been a bug in the Windows Photos app while seeing the CMYK images, or it's possible that Microsoft dropped the support for CMYK images.

If you are facing a similar issue, please try one of these workarounds

until it gets fixed by the Microsoft Windows Product team:

  • Export images in RGB.
  • While exporting the images, uncheck the Embed ICC Profile option.
  • Open the images by default in the Windows Photo viewer app.

I hope this helps!

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Try other formats for print; pdf, tiff.

How do you view your CMYK jpeg files? Not all viewers support them.
