Kerning on extended selections 26.02

i recently downloaded illustrator on my laptop and have used the kerning feature before but not on this laptop and illustrator is now telling me that I cant use it? does anyone have a fix for this? thanks 🙂

Kerning is done between 2 neighbouring letters, which was also the case in previous versions.

Exactly what have you done recently?

not helpful. I get the same popup and have two neighboring letters selected.

Don't make a selection, just put the cursor between the characters.
