I'm looking for a key that will select the next object up/down in the layers panel so when using actions I can just work my way through every object wthout getting RSI in my mouse hand. I have l looked but I can't find anything. Does this exist ?

you can  press "option cmd ]" that is select next object {below or above - depending on the square bracket.}  in the main menu it is: select>choose next object above or below.

that should do the trick.

To add to what Grant H mentioned, you could record and Action. With your top object selected first, record a new action, assign a shortcut key to it (for example F5 button), choose the "Select" menu, then choose "Next Object Below". Stop the action recording.

Now when you select a top object, you can hit your shortcut key and it should select the next object below.
