Knockout Text from Masked & Layered Vector File

I am having trouble merging the masked tire tread vector image behind the text into one united layer with the pathfinder. I assume I need to do this before I can knock out the text above it.

The goal is to knock out the text, but I'm having trouble getting it to work due to the complexity of the vector object behind it. I'd like the text to become the color of the t-shirt (several colors will be used). Anyone have any suggestions? Test file is attached.
