Layers Menu: Resets position while making selections.

Okay, this is a weird one, so please bear with me. 

A lot of my work typically requires detailed editing of component groups within one layer of the drawing. When editing this layer, I am usually zoomed to 1200% or more, navigating between component groups by using the layers menu to select the next group to be edited, and so on.  The groups are component illustrations for different model years of vehicles made by a specific manufacturer and are arranged so that they are on the same layer, sorted in chronological order by year and model and hidden until I need to publish or edit the document.  When editing is required, I can remain zoomed in and easily navigate from one vehicle to the next by simply using the layer menu.  It's usually a quick and simple process:

 

  • Select group
  • Edit components
  • Deselct group
  • Select the next group
  • Repeat until done

However, this is not so simple when the layer menu resets to the top of the layer I am working on every time I attempt to select the next group, and I have to scroll through the menu to locate the last group edited.  Since the layers are hidden when not in use, there is no indication of which group was last edited.  I have tried using the group lock as a marker, but the menu still resets position when selecting/deselecting, and I still have to scroll through the menu to get the groups I need to edit back on the screen.

As with most of my complaints/issues with the software, this is just another minor inconvenience that adds time and frustration to an otherwise enjoyable workday.  Truthfully, I wouldn't be doing what I do if these issues had been there from the start, because I don't need the frustration of cumbersome processes slowing my work down or creating more work for me.

Please let me know if there's something I can do, some setting that can be adjusted (I've looked), or whether this is just going to be another thing that I have to get used to because unwanted features keep being added to the software.

how do I replicate the scrolling issue? 

is this your setup? do you unhide each group at a time from top to bottom?

The current project has 10 layers, each layer has an average of 20 groups that range in size between 2 and 200 elements.  Only a portion of the groups in any particular layer are visible at any given time; they are switched on and off as I need to compose a document for viewing/printing.  When working, I will lock all of the layers I am not editing, and work within a single expanded layer.

 

The issue has been that when selecting whichever group I want to work on, for example layer 7, group 15, when I attempt to click on the group to expand it, the menu will shift downward, causing the next click to be on something I was not expecting to click.  

One of the recent updates has improved this issue, not sure which one, but it has been happening less frequently for the past week.

@Yoyodyne2112 Regrettably, there's no magic button to prevent the Layers panel from resetting its scroll position in your specific scenario; it's a known UX friction point that many wish Adobe would address. While there's no direct setting to "lock" the scroll position of the Layers panel, one common workaround users employ is to create a duplicate "editing layer" at the very top of your layer stack. As you finish editing a group and hide it, you can then quickly click this empty "editing layer" to keep the Layers panel focused near the top, then scroll down to your next target group. Alternatively, you might find some efficiency by using the keyboard shortcuts for navigating between objects (e.g., Tab/Shift+Tab to cycle through objects on the artboard) or by utilizing the "Select Next Object Below" / "Select Next Object Above" commands (Object > Arrange menu, often with custom keyboard shortcuts) once you have one object selected, though this requires the objects to be visible and in a logical stacking order on the artboard, which might not fit your hidden group workflow perfectly.

Thank you for your reply, but none of those suggestions can adequately address my specific scenario.  My documents are very complex.  There can be as many as 100 layered groups within each layer of the document, each of which is hidden until I need to assemble the necessary elements for a PDF to be published.  So the problem is really of my own making, trying to work with too many illustrations in a single file, but I think that your suggestion of using an editing layer might be able to be tweaked for what I need.
