Layers problem

I just updated my illustrator program to the 24.0 version. I am having problems with copying and pasting objects in layers. I made a square on layer 1 and I tried to paste the square on layer 2, it won't let me do it. It just pastes the square back on layer 1.

Did you check if "Paste Remembers Layers" was on in the Layers Panel?

    I don't know where I could check for that, what is happening is I make a red square and try to copy it on another layer, the problem is that I can't paste the square on to another layer. It will paste the square back on the layer I made it on.

    You can check that in the fly out menu of the Layers panel (in the upper right corner)
