Ligatures by default

Why do we have ligatures on by default. How do I turn it off. Illustrator is not text layout program like Indesign. Every time I have to turn it of manually. Can I change just one default template file or something?
What is the logic behind it anyway? Do people want ligatures on everything.

Hi there,

Sorry about that. Ligatures are determined by the default Character style/ Paragraph style in the file preset you are working on. Therefore, you will need to create a New template with ligatures turned off, or you can modify any default template you like. Default templates location is as follows:

Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator <version>\Cool Extras\<locale>\Templates\Blank Templates
Mac: Applications/Adobe Illustrator <version>/Cool extras/<locale>/Templates/Blank Templates

I hope it helps!

You can turn change ligatures to standard characters by selecting the type & unchecking all the options in the opentype window. The first and third ones are for ligatures,

You can then edit and redefine your normal charcter style by unchecking the ligature optons, and you can do this to the template files mentioned by the previous posts.

Hi Anshul,

Unfortunately that document describes templates (and how to create them) and new document profiles, but not how to create a new document profile.

The only document I can find is for CS3: https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/create-custom-new-document-profile.html

I hope this can be updated.
