Linked Items - Do i need to embed?

When my file has linked items (i.e. backrounds, logos etc) - is it necessary for me to embed them before I export to PDF?

Or will they automatically be embedded at full resolution when I export to PDF?

I understand the relevance of embedding if sharing the .ai file. Just can't find a definitive answer as to whether export to pdf embeds them or not.

In a PDF they are always embedded.

The resolution of mages can be changed but that depends on the settings.
