Linked or embedded image in Illustrator

I'm having problems with Illustrator files: as soon as I place the linked photo into the file, the file size grows as if the image would be embedded. However, it is linked (and it shows it as linked, not embedded). Does this have something to do with some setting? I am using Illustrator CC (and never had that problem before with CS6).

Thanx for help...

Correct answer Monika Gause

Yes, in this case I used jpegs.

So, everything is normal and the only way around is with PDF options unchecked?

Yes.

But just in case you want to open this AI file in Photoshop or place it in InDesign ,you will need the PDF option.

You save this with PDF compatibility, right?

The image always gets embedded in the PDF part of the file.

This is what happens:

Well, all the linked images together have 110 MB, while ai file is about 400 MB. And I don't use any fancy effects, shadows etc.

When I save without PDF, sometimes it's OK (falls down to 2 MB), some times it's even bigger (444 MB).

Another file: linked photo is 36 MB, file comes to 133 MB!

Any other solution?

Those files are JPEGs or TIFFs, right?

Illustrator saves them uncompressed.
