Lock Command Not Working

When I lock portions of a group in Illustrator 2023, and then select the rest of the group and click ⌘-X or Delete, the whole group deletes including the locked portion.

 

How do I delete only the unlocked portion of the group?

Select the group.

Ungroup

Deselect via the menu

Reselect via the menu
