Lost settings after upgrade

Question

I upgraded to Illustrator 27.9 yesterday, which I quickly regretted as it’s very buggy. So today, I downgraded to 27.8.1. But when I open the application now, it’s a default Illustrator.

I have a lot of custom shortcuts, workspaces, transparency and export presets, and many many other settings. How do I restore them? They were successfully kept when upgrading to 27.9, but seem to have disappeared while downgrading to 27.8.1. I cannot work without those.

I’m on macOS and I looked into both ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings and ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator 27, but both seem to be newly generated. Where are my previous settings?

Whenever you upgrade an option always presents itself to retain previous settings and preferences. This will ensure that your settings are maintained. The downside of that is that the old settings are not usually fully compatible with the new code that has been written for the upgrade. This often leads to performance problems which can only be fixed by deleting the old preferences. The best way that I have found to deal with the issue is to keep a list of any customizations that you have done to the program which can be redone when you upgrade. It does sound like a pain to do all of this but, unfortunately, it seems to be a fact of life when dealing with computer programs. I would also recommend keeping a copy of your current preference file that you can use to replace any corrupted versions that might occur in your present version of Illustrator.
