Making and A0 into A4 pages using a clipping mask, it used to work but not any more! Why?

I am trying to make and A0 file into many A4 pages. I have done it before many times using the clipping mask but now its saying the object is too complex. Nothing has changed since I did it last time. I have tried making everything into a compound but that too isnt working. In the file are lines for the pattern, my logo which is a vector file and text. I have expanded the text and made it into a compound. The lines are different dot styles to show the different sizes of the garment.

Once agian - all of this is the same as the file I used last time and didnt have any issues using the clipping mask to create the A4 pages. Help!

You can do it without clipping masks but with Artboards instead.

Create an A0 rectangle on top of your artboard.

Object > Path > Split Into Grid and create an 4x4 A4 grid.

While still selected: Object > Artboards > Convert to Artboards.

You have now one large A0 and 16 A4 sized artboards.

If you create a PDF Preset with Illustrator Editing Unchecked, you can use that in Export for screens to export separate Artboards.

I've created a simple artboard splitter script.

You can download it here:

What kind of object are you using as the clipping mask? If possible show a screenshot of your workspace with the objects selected and the layers panel visible.

Thank you for your reply I truly appreciate it!

Turns out I had the layers in the wrong order. I needed to put the artwork layer at the top! So simple 🙂
