Maximum file size limit for placed high res images in Illustrator

Hello!
I tried to place a super hi-res image (1450 x 480 cm 72dpi 140mb) in Illustrator, only the wireframe shows.

I reduced the height proportionately to 300cm, all else contant, and it previews fine.

An even higher resolution than the former specs simply crashed my Illustrator 26.5.3
(Opens in Photoshop, but crashed my Illustrator)

Anyone know the speccifications/limitations for hi-res image placements?

It's quite unproductive to experiment, given that my files are so huge.

macOS Monterey 12.6.3
iMac M1 2021, 16gb memory

16 GB of RAM just isn't a lot , when you're working with large or a lot of images.

I could only affrod 16gb for my M1 iMac upgrade at home … My office comp is a 2015 27" iMac, but at 32gb ram. I'll know how it performs with the single super hi-res image on Tues, when I go back to office! 😅

Start by switching your preview to software-only mode. I'm pretty sure you're simply running out of video memory.

I just tried it, doesn't work still, unfortunately.
Thanks for you help!

From your advice, does it mean that if I am running out of memory, or working with lots of link files on my illustrator document (not of super hi-res ones but hefty number of big links), I could switch to CPU view, ot just turn off GPU in preferences, to speed it up a little and freeup some ram?

Thank you!
