Minus Front is making x's out of circles

Hey guys,

First off, I'm pretty new to illustrator. But I can't seem to figure out what i'm doing wrong here. I put a circle in front of a bloated polygon and try to minus front. The following ensues...

I've searched everywhere and maybe I'm using the wrong language, but I couldn't find anything. I really appreciate any help you can provide! Sorry if this is a really stupid question.

    Your screenshots show that you apply effects on the shapes ( pucker and bloat )

    you need to first expand the effects before applying minus front

    go to  object -> expand appearance
