Missing links in PDF opened with Illustrator

I have multi-page design PDFs from a few different clients that include photos. When I try to open the PDFs in Illustrator CC, instead of showing the PDF Open dialogue box that lets me pick what page I want to open, it just tries to open the file with each page as an artboard, but every photo/linked image gets the "Could not find linked file" error.

I know those linked files are there. I can open these PDFs in Illustrator CS6 on my old pc without any issue.

Is there some way to force the PDF Open dialogue box to show up when opening the file, or some other way around this? I'm really confused why CS6 has no issue here but CC does.

Sure.

Create a new file and then File > Place

Your file consists of 2 parts: the AI part and the PDF part.

In the PDF part all images are embedded. In the AI part: they are not automatically embedded.

The old Illustrator version imports the PDF part. Your current version opens the AI part.

You can open your file in Photoshop (which will import the PDF) and then extract the photos from the PDF part.

Thanks, I guess that at least gets me access to the linked files themselves. Is there any way to get Illustrator CC to import the PDF part?
