I am new to illustrator and all the tutorials show a toolbar across the top but I do not have it. Does anyone know how to make it visable?

    To add to what Kurt mentioned, you're probably using the Essentials Workspace (Look in the upper right of your window.) Click on Essentials and choose another Workspace from the menu, such as Painting or Typography depending on what kind of a project you're working on. These Workspaces will include the Control panel.
