@e.l have you thought of using Adobe Dimensions? If you have the CC Subcription, it should be available to you. It's designed for creating 3D scenes and visualizations, making it well-suited for packaging design. You can easily import 2D designs from Illustrator and place them on 3D models. 

Or try Adobe Substance 3D another application designed for creating high-quality 3D materials and assets.

In Illustrator, there is a new feature where you can create a Mockup (Beta) too
