Multiple paths on one image? How to get rid of the outer path?

I'm not quite sure why, but when I paste this image from indesign to illustrator there seems to be two paths. I want to get rid of the outer path as it is making it difficult to work with the image when I transfer it over to after effects as it only recognises the outer path. Appreciate any help anyone can give me!

Most probably there's a clipping mask applied.

Open the layers panel to check what you have. Then you can release whatever it is.
