my file has no info on it

i made a file in illustator- it has about 30 pages- when i try to ope if it opens but sthes no artwork anymore- if i try to open in preview its gives be this message - what can i do to get the file back in working condition?

YOu did not save it PDF compatible, so it will not open in PDF editors or PDF viewers.

Where did you save the file?

How large is the file?

Do you have a backup? Time Machine?
