My Illustrator has gone full bore wonky...

Hey all,

I have a job to do and I’m panicking. I updated my Mac Mini 2018 today with the new Sequoia 15.8.1 update. Shortly after, I launched Illustrator, and right in the middle of working on a map, drawing a bunch of roads, my black and white Selection arrow tools reversed their functions. Literally, right in the midst of working on my drawing...one minute things were fine and the next...crazy. Not only that, but my Pen tool won’t end a line now. I click once to create a point and click again to create a line, and it won’t let go...won’t stop at the last point. It wants me to keep drawing. The only way to let go is to hit Escape, or click back to the first point, which I cannot do. This is freaking me out because I can’t draw now. I’ve been working in this program since the late 1980’s. I’ve never seen it do anything like this.

I should add that I completely uninstalled Illustrator, removed my old Preferences, and reinstalled the program thinking maybe it became corrupted somehow. That didn’t fix a thing. What the heck? It’s still screwed up.

HELP!!!!

@Ton Frederiks I figured it out...only took all day picking AI’s brain. LOL, so I’ve been drawing in Illustrator since the late 1980’s...seriously. Today, for whatever reason, I noticed something that I should have noticed back in 2021. They switched the colors of the black and white Selection and Direct Selection arrows, for dark mode, which doesn’t look any darker to me than Illustrator has looked since the late 1980’s. It’s crazy I never noticed this before. Selection was always a black arrow and Direct Selection was always a white arrow, but they changed that 5 years ago. And even though I’ve been drawing in it constantly I just noticed it today. Crazy, huh? 🤣 Oh, and my Pen tool got weird after I uninstalled Illustrator, and deleted my old Prefs, then reinstalled the program, thinking maybe that was causing my Selection arrow issue. It changed all kinds of settings. Ugh! What a day...

Does that mouse have its own driver?

    Hello @Supernaut63

I’m sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind sharing more details, such as the version of Illustrator installed and a brief screen recording of the problem, so we can better assist you?

Also, try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (macOS) and after rebooting your computer in Safe Mode (macOS) to see if it helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Not sure what you mean about screen “recording” or how to do that, but here’s a screen grab showing the selection arrows reversed. Black should be on the left and white should be on the right, but they are reversed. When I hit the V button it selects the white arrow on the left.

Also, when I switch from Workspace > Essentials to Essentials Classic I get this:

The pen tool won’t let me let go of it unless I hit the Escape button on my keyboard. I have spent hours on this. I can’t figure it out and I have a big map that I have to get done. This is driving me crazy.

@Supernaut63 Pressing “V” should activate the Selection tool on the left, I cannot see anything activated in your screendump.

Regarding the Pen tool behaviour, try unchecking in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Diplay the Enable Rubber Band for: Pen Tool.

Which input device are you using? A Mouse, a Wacom …?

Did you install anything else? A new system extension, mouse driver?

I use a Logitech B100 Mouse. I’ve been using it for years. I haven’t installed anything else but the new Mac OS today...15.8.1
