Question

My supplier is asking for a 32 bit Illustrator file... What the?

Im using Windows 7 (64 bit) and my supplier is saying this:

"We find that we couldn't open the artwork of XXXX.

Because our computer is 32-bit system, and your artwork can only open with 64-bit system.

Pls resend us the artwork of XXXX that could open with 32-bit system."

Now I've been doing this for a long time but I didnt think you could "Save As" to a 32 bit compatible .ai file?

I have saved it to CS2 as I have to do with all of my finished art files (some suppliers have systems that are incredibly outdated) but should this even be a thing?

Does this make any sense to anyone?

    Thanks for the suggestions!

I suspect there are afew answers here ie - I dont think they are using illustrator. I dont think they know what they are talking about and are assuming thats the issue.

I've saved the file back to CS2, saved a pdf version and a wmf version...

    Lets see hoew that goes.

    Hi JasonLECD!

Your main problem is that the file cannot be opened by the supplier.

Unless they can provide an error  screenshot (which is unlikely) that shows that " File cannot be opened. It's 64-bit file?!? huh?",

you should stick to the usual troubleshooting suspects...

    • Illustrator application version is lower than yours
      • Solution: Save to a lower version (even as low as Illustrator 3, but even v10 is already too old and should be enough)
    • Use of a a different software that doesn't support higher version of Illustrator files.
      • Solution: Save to a lower version or use other format, like EPS. But be mindful of the version too.

Well, to be blunt: Your supplier doesn't know what they are talking about. AI files are agnostic of operating system and processor. the comment therefore is rather nonsensical. if there is a problem it has other causes, but without detailed info nobody can even take a guess. To me it simply seems like they are not opening the files in Illustrator, but another program that has difficulty parsing the structures in which case this has nothing to do with Illustrator at all.

The file shouldn't be a problem.

Do you perhaps work on. Mac and they work on a PC? Not that it would be a problem, but some folks just don't know how to deal with some of the stuff in an unzipped folder.

Or did the file somehow get corrupted when sending?

You should ask them for the exact error they are seeing.
